Description
No. 74 on Old Main Street is a house built in the mid to late 18th century. It features hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a symmetrical three-bay facade. Notable exterior elements include a plinth, rusticated quoins, and a moulded band. The doorway is framed by an eared architrave and has an overlight with glazing bars above a six-panel door. All windows are adorned with architraves, moulded sills, and connecting aprons, with the central window featuring an eared architrave. The gables are coped and supported by kneelers, with stacks present.
At the rear, the windows have raised plain-stone surrounds, and there is a tall cross-window that illuminates the stairwell; part of this cross-window remains on the first floor to the right, suggesting that all windows were likely originally cross-mullioned. The central doorway at the rear has a chamfered surround.
Inside, there is a dog-leg stair with turned balusters. The front chambers retain original fireplaces featuring raised monolithic jambs and lintels with chamfered surrounds, which still hold decorative cast-iron grates of fine craftsmanship.
