Description
Higher House is a derelict house dated and initialled "W S N/1666". It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof that survives in parts only. The building has two storeys and features a three-room front with a rear dairy, following a through-passage plan.
The ground floor has double chamfered mullioned windows, while the first floor has chamfered mullioned windows. There is a four-light window above the ground floor. An inserted 19th-century doorway has monolithic jambs, and there is a six-light housebody window with a four-light window above it. A two-light fire-window is accompanied by a four-light flat-faced mullioned window above. The doorway features composite jambs and a Tudor arch lintel with the date set within a tressure and a stop chamfered surround. To the right of the door is a small square chamfered opening that is blocked, with a two-light window above it.
There are two former two-light windows with hoodmoulds that have heart-shaped label stops, and other hoodmoulds with straight returns over the ground floor windows. Above these is a three-light window. Most windows are missing some mullions. The left-hand return wall has an extruded stack with offsets, and some windows survive on the ground floor at the rear. This once fine building has suffered from neglect and abuse over the years.
