Description

The Lodge to New Cragg Hall, built in 1906, serves as a gatehouse for the now-demolished Cragg Hall. It is designed in the Arts and Crafts style, constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys.

Notable architectural features include steeply angled buttresses with coped gables, which have kneelers and a carved decorative tall keystone above the upper window that rises to form a finial at the apex of the front gable. Below this is a four-light flat-faced mullioned window situated above a basket-arched gateway, which is adorned with joggled voussoirs and retains the original full-height oak gates, featuring pierced Gothic carved roundels and the date.

Additionally, there is a canted bay window with cross-windows and two-light windows above on the first floor. The inner doorway through the gateway has chamfered jambs and a lintel with a tall expressed false keystone, and it retains its original ironwork. The rear of the lodge displays similar architectural details, including a semi-octagonal stair tower and an outshut with a four-light window at the junction of the single-storey range, which has altered windows. The building features one gable stack, one on the ridge of the gatehouse, and another stack.
