Description

St. John's Old Vicarage is a former vicarage, now a house, built in 1901. It is constructed of dressed stone with a slate roof and stands two and a half storeys tall. This building is a good example of Vernacular Revival architecture. The front has three bays with matching gables that feature copings, kneelers, and ball finials. The left gable is set back and includes a two-storey bay window that aligns with the right gable, which has ten-light mullioned and transomed windows on both floors. The right gable has a similar design but includes an arched centre light and a three-light attic window.

Between the gables is a wide segmental archway with an expressed keystone and moulded impost, flanked by Ionic pilasters. Above this, there is an entablature that forms an open arched balustrade for the first-floor balcony. At the rear, there is a gabled wing that is set at right angles to the front gables, which have parallel ridges. The left return wall features a window positioned at the angle with the rear wing, containing four-light and two-light windows on its two faces. The rear side has a doorway with a shaped lintel and an elaborately moulded surround.

On the right return wall, there is a canted ground floor bay window, and to the left of this window is a tablet inscribed with the following text:

"To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Hinchliffe Hinchliffe esq. J.P. of Cragg Hall in this parish this Vicarage house is erected by his daughter Helen Strickland, A. D. 1901."

The building has three chimney stacks, one on each ridge. Nearby was Cragg Hall, which has since been demolished, but it shared similar architectural characteristics with this vicarage.
