Description

The Church of St John is a church that was rebuilt in 1839, replacing an earlier church of which there is no evidence. It features dressed stone and a slate roof, with a west tower, nave, and shallow chancel designed in the lancet style. The three-stage embattled tower has angle buttresses that rise to form pinnacles, and all windows are tall lancets with deeply double chamfered surrounds and pointed arches. The tower has windows on its west face only, with a doorway set in the north face. The second stage of the tower includes a clock on the north and south faces, while the third stage serves as the belfry. The nave is aisless and consists of four bays, each with tall windows supported by shallow buttresses, and features a corbel table. The chancel is shallow and single-bayed, with a tall east window that has panelled tracery, and angle buttresses with outshuts on either side that have lean-to roofs and pointed arched doorways.

Inside, the church has a single vessel with a shallow chancel set within a pointed arch. There is a gallery at the west end supported by clustered iron colonnettes, featuring a brattished rail with a panelled front and arched heads. The roof is flat with moulded ribs. A memorial to Rev. Thomas Crowther, the original minister who served "38 years in this Parish," is dated 1859.
