Description
Swan Bank Farmhouse and attached cottages and barn date from the early 19th century, with an added barn from 1835, initialled "C.P.". The buildings form a U-shaped plan. They are constructed of watershot masonry, with a stone slate roof. The barn gable features a blocked lunette and a circular hole to the apex containing a re-used apex stone with a carved face. A segmental arched cart entry is present on the left hand return wall, with a projecting keystone and impost. Mistal doorways with tie-stone jambs are located on either side of the cart entry. Gutter brackets are present. The right hand return wall has a similar arrangement, with a dated keystone above a Venetian window. To the right of the barn are a pair of two-storey, single-cell cottages. Each cottage has a doorway with sill ties and a flat-faced mullioned window of three broad lights with a projecting sill on each floor. A central stack rises from the ridge. A wing breaks forward, and the right hand return wall features two cells, each with a doorway to the left of a three-light window, with a matching window above. Another central stack rises from the ridge. The roof is hipped to the northern end. An outshut to the rear of the central cottages incorporates two mid-20th century stacks that are in keeping with the building’s character.
