Description
West Lodge, built around 1860, serves as the entrance to Murdostoun Castle. This single-storey building has a distinctive L-shaped plan that wraps around a tall three-storey entrance tower. The tower features a hood-moulded shouldered doorway and a crenellated parapet. The main body of the lodge has a gable facing the driveway, which includes a narrow canted window with sidelights. There are mullioned windows on both the ground floor and the attic in the gable that faces the main roadway. The structure is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, topped by a deep-eaved slate roof and a central axial stack. The gatepiers are notable for their castellated and gabletted design, complemented by cast-iron gates and quadrant walls.
