Description
Newmains Police Station, located on Manse Road in Newmains, was designed by Cullen, Lochead and Brown and built in 1905. This two-storey, five-bay building features a symmetrical, bowed rectangular plan in the Scottish 17th century style. The central block is bowed, flanked by gabled pavilions, and constructed from bull-faced white sandstone with ashlar margins.
On the northeast elevation, the principal facade includes a tripartite window with stone mullions at the center of the ground floor, flanked by panelled timber entrance doors with a bead-moulded surround. A broad ashlar band separates the floors and is inscribed with "COUNTY CONSTABULARY," above which are framed heraldic shields over the entrances. The upper storey has three windows, while the flanking shouldered gable end bays feature advanced, two-storey canted windows with parapets and ashlar panels between the floors.
The southwest elevation has advanced shouldered gable bays on either side, with windows at the gablehead and returns, and short balustrades at the outer edges. Battered wallhead chimneys are located on the inside returns, and there is a single-storey advanced gabled bay in the center.
The northwest elevation mirrors the southeast, featuring an advanced gabled bay to the right, a small window at the ground level, and a tall narrow window at the gablehead. Coped skews with round 'daisy' pattern skewputts and a small spire are also present. The center has a single-storey balustraded advanced bay with a narrow window, a door to the return, and another narrow window above on the main wall, while the left side has a blank bay.
The building has sash and case windows of various sizes, a grey slate roof with lead flashing, two coped bull-faced stacks on the central block, a battered stack on the central rear wing, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the original fitted wooden enquiry desk remains in the reception area, while the rest of the interior has been modernized.
The boundary wall and railings include a bowed wall to the northeast that returns along the edges of the principal elevation. Round corner piers with shallow dome caps are linked by a low coped wall and railings, with a low coped wall and railings also along the returns. The wall is made of bull-faced sandstone with ashlar coping.
