Description
Murdostoun Bridge is an 1817 single-span segmental-arch bridge built over the South Calder Water. The bridge crosses the river, which historically divided the Murdostoun Estate from the Allanton estate and also marks the parish boundary. It is situated equidistant between the village of Bonkle, associated with the Allanton estate, and Murdostoun Castle. Constructed primarily of yellow ashlar sandstone, the bridge features chamfered wing walls, a hoodmoulded arch ring, and low ashlar parapets. It was likely built by the Stewarts of Allanton and shares a similar style with the triple-span Allanton House bridge (listed separately). The date aligns with the construction of many cottages in Bonkle village, while the Murdostoun estate itself was unoccupied at the time.
