Description
Dated 1817, 2 Allanton Road is a single-story, three-bay, rectangular estate cottage situated within the Allanton estate. Constructed of squared sandstone with ashlar detailing, the cottage features a cavetto moulded cornice.
The north (principal) elevation has a central door flanked by windows. It has bipartite windows with stone mullions, projecting cills, and penticed stone canopies. An unfinished wall edge is visible on the far left. The south (rear) elevation mirrors the north, with a central door and flanking windows. The east (side) elevation includes an advanced bay to the centre, topped with a piended roof, and windows to its returns. A small, blind window is situated in the upper left portion of the west (side) elevation.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing, and features cast-iron rainwater goods, coped brick gable end chimney stacks, coped skews with moulded skewputts. The interior was not inspected in 2000.
The cottage dates from the Stewarts of Allanton's early 19th-century improvement programme. The unfinished edge on the east side suggests it was originally intended to be the first in a row of cottages. It is currently the best-preserved cottage in Bonkle, with many others having undergone alterations and extensions. Similar features, such as bipartite windows and stone penticed canopies, are found in other cottages within Bonkle.
