Description
Dated 1815-17, with a carved date stone of 1817, 5 Allanton Road is a single-story, seven-bay terrace built in a classical style. It was originally known as Waterloo Cottages and was constructed as estate workers' housing for the Allanton estate and nearby Allanton House. The terrace’s construction marked the first buildings on Allanton Road, created to replace the old Edinburgh-Ayr toll road which was flooded to form Allanton Loch as part of a wider estate improvement programme undertaken by the Stewarts of Allanton between 1800 and 1820.
The building is constructed of squared sandstone with ashlar detailing. The principal south elevation features a regular pattern of windows, with two bays prominently distinguished by pediments above the entrances. Each pediment contains an oculus in the tympanum, and the date "1817" is carved above the door in the third bay from the right. The windows are bipartite with stone mullions, projecting cills, and a cavetto moulded cornice. The north elevation has an advanced gabled bay with a central chimney stack, although the rest of the rear is currently obscured by modern additions. The east side has a single window, while the west side features a window with a small stone pentice canopy, another small window to the right, and a modern addition incorporating an entrance to No. 7.
The windows are timber sash and case, fitted with plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slates with lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods and cavetto moulded coping to the ridge stacks are also present. The interior was not inspected in 2000.
