Description

3 Allanton Road, Bonkle, is a terrace of seven cottages built between 1815 and 1817, with the date 1817 inscribed above the door of the third bay from the right. It was originally known as Waterloo Cottages and was constructed as estate workers’ housing for the Allanton estate and nearby Allanton House. The terrace was one of the first buildings on Allanton Road, built to replace the old Edinburgh-Ayr toll road, which was flooded to create Allanton Loch as part of a wider estate improvement programme undertaken by the Stewarts of Allanton between 1800 and 1820.

The terrace is a single storey and consists of seven bays, displaying classical details. It is constructed of squared sandstone courses with ashlar trim. The principal, south elevation has a regular fenestration pattern. Two bays feature pediments, each topped with an oculus within the tympanum. The second bay from the left and the third bay from the right have these pedimented entrances. The interior was not inspected in 2000. The rear, north elevation has an advanced gabled bay with a chimney stack in the central bay; however, this elevation is largely obscured by modern additions. The east and west side elevations both retain original windows; the west elevation has a stone pentice canopy above one window, and a smaller window to the right, alongside a modern addition with an entrance for No. 7. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, incorporating stone mullions and projecting cills. The roof is covered with grey slates, with lead flashing, and features cast-iron rainwater goods and cavetto moulded coping to the ridge stacks.
