Description

The building at 7 Allanton Road, Bonkle, is a terrace of cottages dating from 1815 to 1817, with a date of 1817 inscribed above the door of the third bay from the right. Originally known as Waterloo Cottages, they were built as housing for estate workers associated with the Allanton estate and nearby Allanton House. The terrace was the first built on Allanton Road, which was created to replace the former Edinburgh-Ayr toll road, after the old road was flooded to create Allanton Loch as part of a larger estate improvement program undertaken by the Stewarts of Allanton between 1800 and 1820.

The terrace is a single-storey, seven-bay structure featuring classical detailing. It is constructed from squared sandstone courses with ashlar facing. The front elevation (south) has a regular fenestration, with the second bay from the left and the third bay from the right distinguished by pediments incorporating oculi (circular windows) in their tympanum. The third bay from the right has the date '1817' above the centrally placed door, which is set within a blind relieving arch. The rear elevation (north) features an advanced gabled bay with a central chimney stack, though the rest of the rear is obscured by modern additions. Side elevations display a single window to the east and a window with a small stone pentice canopy and a smaller window to the west. A modern addition, with an entrance providing access to No. 7, is situated on the right-hand side.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and feature stone mullions and projecting cills. The roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing, with cast-iron rainwater goods. Cavetto moulded coping is present on the ridge stacks. The interior was not inspected in 2000.
