Description

The East Gate and Lodge at Darnaway Castle, built in 1868, is a two-storey, gabled lodge facing north towards the driveway. It features coursed tooled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The lodge has an advanced and gabled centre with a two-storey gabled porch that includes a moulded basket-arched recessed entrance and a monogrammed plaque above. The first floor slightly jetties out, and there is a canted window to the left of the porch. The ground and first floors have bipartite and tripartite windows, some of which are covered by stone canopies. The porch lights have lattice-pane glazing, while other windows are fitted with 3-pane and 6-pane casements. The roof is adorned with tall coped octagonal ridge and wallhead stacks arranged in clusters of three and two, respectively, and features decorative bargeboards and slate roofing.

The gatepiers and gates, also dated 1868, consist of four square polished ashlar gatepiers that flank the carriage and outer pedestrian entrances. Each pier is chamfered above a square base and has necked and corniced caps that support carved stone Earl's coronets as finials. The ornate cast- and wrought-iron gates, made by Frs. Morton in Liverpool, include one pair of double gates and two single gates, all of similar size, featuring a centre cartwheel design within a decorative frame with gilded detailing.
