West Gate And Lodge, Darnaway Castle

West Gate and Lodge at Darnaway Castle was built in 1868 and features an asymmetrical, two-storey design with a gabled, three-bay facade facing the driveway. The structure is made of tooled coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. A projecting gabled porch is located at the outer (west) bay, which connects to an advanced gabled outer east bay through a short lean-to corridor that is illuminated by a tripartite window with lattice-pane glazing. The east gable has a canted window, and there are tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors of the east return elevation. The lodge mainly has multi-pane glazing, with stone canopies over some windows. The roof features a central ridge cluster of four round, coped stacks, decorative bargeboards, wooden apex finials, and is covered with slate.

The gatepiers and gates, also dated 1868, consist of tall polished ashlar piers with Gibbsian banding and moulded cornices topped with finials. The bases of the piers are embossed with carved swags of fruit and flowers. Each side of the main entrance is flanked by a pair of lower ashlar terminal piers with corniced caps. The entrance features a pair of large, heavy cast- and wrought-iron carriage gates adorned with gilded decorative detailing, along with an ornate wrought-iron overthrow that includes a central gilded coronet and other decorative elements.
