78, Holgate Road

No. 78 Holgate Road is a house, now used as an office, built around 1845 to 1850, with some alterations from the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick with painted stone or stucco dressings, and features an addition in red brick with stone lintels. It has a concrete tile roof and stands three storeys tall above a cellar, with two bays.

The first and second floor windows are sashed, featuring sill bands and painted rusticated lintels. On the left side at ground-floor and cellar level, there is a late 19th-century straight-sided bay window with a slate roof. This bay window has narrow sashes without glazing bars on the side walls and two wider similar windows facing forward at both cellar and ground-floor levels. The doorway is located on the right and has a pilaster doorcase with a plain cornice and panelled reveals. The door itself has six panels, and the overlight is divided into six panes. The gutter is supported by rectangular timber brackets, and there are shared chimneys to the right and in front of the ridge to the left. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value as part of Holgate Street.
