Description
Numbers 70, 70A, and 72 are a group of three houses built between 1846 and 1847, with alterations in the 20th century. They are constructed of brick with painted stone dressings, featuring slate roofs. The windows are sash windows with painted rusticated lintels that have keystones and segmental soffits. A sill band runs across the first floor windows. Numbers 70A and 72 each have one main bay, though Number 72 has a smaller second window on the first floor above its doorway. The coupled doorcases have two engaged Ionic columns and a plain central panelled pilaster, with panelled reveals. The 20th-century doors are partly glazed, with plain rectangular overlights. Number 70, at the right, has two bays and two flat-roofed 20th-century attic dormers. A narrow ground-floor window is positioned to the left of a pilaster doorcase. Above the panelled door is a plain rectangular overlight. Timber brackets support the gutters, and ridge chimneys are present on the left and between Numbers 70 and 70A. The interior was not inspected. In front of Numbers 70A and 72, a brick wall with stone copings supports railings with cast finials, along with two gates and iron gateposts that have ball finials. The wall adjoins the railings of Number 74. Plain railings connect the houses between Numbers 70A and 72, and between Numbers 70 and 70A.
