Description
The Old Cottage is a Grade II listed building located in Saddleworth, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building consists of a 4-bay single-depth range with various constructions, including a former barn wing at the rear of bay 1.
The original house, comprising bays 2 and 3, has a central door that is obscured by a 20th-century porch, flanked by 4 and 6-light mullion windows. There is a 14-light workshop window on the first floor and heightened eaves. Bay 4 is a later addition and includes garage doors on the ground floor. Bay 1, also added later, features a 4-light window on each floor. The building has a total of four ridge chimney stacks, a dressed door surround, and 2-light windows on the gable.
The former barn wing at the rear was converted into a house in the early 19th century. It includes a blocked cart entry, 3 and 5-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows, and a former shippon door with a chamfered surround. There is also a 20th-century garage at the rear.
