Description

Ryefields and Ryefields Cottage is a house and cottage located in Uppermill, dating from the late 18th century with early 19th-century alterations. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with a total of six bays and three storeys, along with a later wing at the rear.

The cottage, situated on the left, was built after the house and includes an early 19th-century porch with a four-centred arch doorway and a coped gable. It has an altered ground floor window and features four and one-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows, along with a rusticated door surround at the gable.

The house has a similar porch, with a canted bay window to the left and a square bay window to the right, all dating from the 19th century. The first and second floors each contain two four-light and two two-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows. Above an eaves band, there is an early 19th-century coped parapet with six niches beneath small gablets. The building is topped with four ridge chimney stacks that have cornices, and the gables are coped with kneelers.

The right gable features an arched window and a porch, while the rear includes a door with an arched head and three, four, and eleven-light recessed flat-faced mullion windows, many of which still have their original leaded panes. There are also two blocked taking-in doors. Inside, there is a panelled entrance hall and other fittings that date from the early 19th-century alterations.
