Description
Birches Farmhouse and Cottage is a farmhouse and adjoining cottage dating from the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan with a total of six bays and two storeys. The original two-unit house is made up of bays three and four, which includes a later door with a square-cut surround to the left, a 20th-century porch, quoins, and ground floor windows with three, four, and two lights, as well as a first floor window with three and four lights, all featuring recessed cavetto-moulded mullions. The additional bays to the right, which form the cottage, have recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows and a door similar to the original. There are two ridge chimney stacks, while the rear of the building has been largely rebuilt and extended in the 20th century.
