Description

SADDLEWORTH KNOWL TOP LANE SE 00 NW (east side) 4/185 Birches Farmhouse - and cottage - II Farmhouse and adjoining cottage. Mid C18 with later additions and alterations. Hammer-dressed watershot stone with graduated stone slate roof. Single-depth plan with a total of 6 bays and 2 storeys. Bays 3 and 4 constitute the original 2-unit house which has a later door with square- cut surround to left, a C20 porch, quoins, 3, 4 and 2-light ground floor windows and a 3 and 4-light first floor window all with recessed cavetto-moulded mullions. Additional bays to right (i.e. the cottage) have recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows and a door as above. 2 ridge chimney stacks. Rear largely rebuilt and extended in C20.
