Description

Knowl Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse located on the west side of Knowl Top Lane, Saddleworth. It is constructed of hammer-dressed watershot stone with a graduated stone slate roof. The original building was based on a 2-unit plan with two storeys, but additions have been made to the left gable and a late 18th century wing was added to the rear. The farmhouse has quoins. The front elevation has three, four, and two-light windows on the ground floor, and two three-light windows on the first floor; all windows have double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullions. A ridge chimney stack is present. A gable entrance is framed by a dressed stone surround, and there are two-light gable windows above. The wing to the rear features three, four, and six-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows and a blocked doorway. A one-storey wing extends from the left gable, with a 20th century brick extension to the rear.
