Description

Pex Place is a Grade II listed house and engineering works located on the north side of Bacup Road in Todmorden. It was originally a poorhouse for Todmorden and dates back to 1804, as indicated by the first deed. The building features watershot masonry with ashlar quoins and a stone slate roof, rising to 3½ storeys.

The front gable, which faces the road and the Rochdale Canal, has three bays. The central bay is slightly offset to the left and includes a doorway with large tie-stones and a raised lintel. The first floor has a single light window that is broken into the doorway, which was previously accessed by a now-removed gallery. Above, there is a similar window on the second floor, and another window retains a mullion that forms a two-light window in the attic. On either side of the central bay, there are wide, flat-faced mullioned windows with two lights on each floor, although the glazing has been altered. The rear of the building is set back to the earth, and the return walls feature a doorway with tie-stones leading to the third floor, flanked by single light windows.
