Description

White Lion House is a Grade II listed building located on Butts Road in Ashover. This house, which was formerly an inn, dates back to the mid-17th century and has 18th and 19th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed from coursed gritstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins, coped gables with plain kneelers, and ball finials on the west side. The house has two ridge stacks and a Welsh slate roof, forming an L-plan layout with the 17th-century range facing the street.

The north elevation is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with a gabled bay at the west end. This gable features a quoined doorway on the east side, which has a quoined surround, a heavy lintel, and a plain planked door. Above the door, there is a figure on a moulded base. To the west, there are stacked windows at both ground and first floor levels; the ground floor window has two lights in a plain surround, while the first floor has a three-light mullioned window. Additionally, there is a single-light 17th-century window at the gable apex. On the west side, there is a small single-storey lean-to with a stone slate roof. The east side has three bays featuring stone-framed 19th-century windows with 20th-century frames, along with garage doors at the eastern end.
