Description

Barn to Castle Hill Farm is a Grade II listed building dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of watershot rubble with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The barn is two storeys high and consists of three bays, featuring a rear barn and two wings that project forward with gable ends facing the road.

The central bay includes a wagon entrance with a chamfered surround and a segmental-headed arch, featuring two-leaf plank doors. There are ground-floor breathers on both sides, with a blocked keyed oeil-de-boeuf window above. The left-hand wing has a right-hand coach entrance with a plain surround, impost blocks, a round head, and a projecting keystone; this entrance is now partly blocked to create a window with a plain surround and six-pane sash. In the centre of this wing is a stable entrance with a similar surround and a plank door. To the left, there is a ground-floor window with a plain surround and nine-pane sashes. The upper floor has two loft entrances, both with plain surrounds; the left-hand entrance has a plank door, while the right-hand entrance is now blocked.

The right-hand wing mirrors the left but has a single upper floor loft entrance. The eaves are adorned with shaped modillions, and the roof is hipped. The gable ends of both wings feature chamfered quoins and a blocked keyed pitching eye. The barn includes a shippon at the lower level and an exposed king post roof. Each wing provides stabling for two horses and features a lathe and plaster finish with wooden fittings.
