Description

This is a cast-iron milepost located on Buxton New Road in Rainow, dating from around 1820. It features a cylindrical head mounted on a narrower cylindrical post. The head has three panels, with the north face indicating "MACCL 1 3/4 MILES" and the south face stating "BUXTON 10 MILES." The name of the maker, J Harrison Ltd. Derby, is also displayed on the post. This milepost is one of six similar markers along the 1821 turnpike on Buxton New Road in Rainow and Macclesfield Forest.
