Description

This milepost, located on Buxton New Road in Rainow, dates from around 1820 and is made of cast iron. It features a cylindrical head mounted on a narrower cylindrical post. The head has three panels, with the south face indicating a distance of 2 and 3/4 miles to Macclesfield, while the north-east face shows a distance of 9 miles to Buxton. This milepost is one of six similar markers along the Buxton New Road turnpike established in 1821 in the areas of Rainow and Macclesfield Forest.
