Description
This milepost, located at Buxton Road in Macclesfield Forest, dates from around 1820 and is made of cast iron. It features a cylindrical head mounted on a narrower cylindrical post, which has three panels. The north wrist face displays the distance to Buxton as 5 miles, while the north-east face indicates Macclesfield is 6 and three-quarters miles away. The post is marked with the maker's name, J Harrison Ltd. Derby.
This milepost is part of a complete set of bollard mileposts that were established along the new Macclesfield to Buxton turnpike in 1821. There are three other similar mileposts in Macclesfield Forest, two in Rainow, and another in Wildboarclough.
