Description

This listing describes a milepost and milestone located 15 metres west of number 2 in Great Burdon. The milestone, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, is made of sandstone and stands 0.5 metres high. It has a square plan with a rounded top and features illegible lettering. The milepost, from the 19th century, is made of cast iron and painted white, with raised letters painted black. It has a triangular plan with a sloping top and a semicircular back plate that reads "DURHAM COUNTY." On the left side, there is a pointing hand indicating "STOCKTON 9 MILES," and on the right side, another pointing hand indicating "DARLINGTON 2 MILES."
