Description

This is a late 18th- or early 19th-century cottage combined with a late 19th-century smithy. The cottage is constructed of handmade brick in an irregular bond, with a roof tiled on the front and covered with corrugated asbestos on the rear. It has a rebuilt brick chimney stack. The smithy is built with engineering brick in an English garden wall bond and has a pantiled roof and a brick chimney stack.

The cottage is two storeys high and has one bay. The windows and door are framed by rubbed-brick flat arches. A boarded door is on the right side, and a 20-pane window with a horizontally-sliding 6-pane section is on the left. Above this is a 16-pane horizontal sliding sash window. There are three projecting brick courses at the eaves. The steeply-pitched roof has swept eaves, and a raised verge on the left features a corbelled-out kneeler. A chimney stack is located at the left end of the cottage.

To the left return of the cottage is a one-storey, three-bay smithy. It has a wide 20th-century opening with a pair of boarded doors on the right and a 20th-century casement window on the left. The steeply-pitched roof has a raised verge on the left with tumbled-in brickwork on the gable. A chimney stack has been heightened at the left end.

A one-storey outshut is located at the rear of the cottage. The interior of the cottage has been gutted. Inside the smithy is a large brick forge. The buildings are included in the listing for their group value.
