Description
Ivy Cottage is a row of three houses located in Great Burdon, with No. 2 dating from the early 18th century and Nos. 3 and 4 from the mid to late 18th century, featuring 19th-century alterations. The houses are constructed of narrow brick in irregular bond, topped with ridged concrete roof tiles and brick chimney stacks. No. 2, which is lower than the others, has two storeys and three bays. It features a central replaced boarded door and late 20th-century casement windows in original openings, which have rubbed-brick flat arches and projecting stone sills. The roof is steeply pitched with swept eaves, and there are central ridge and right end stacks. The right return of No. 2 has been rebuilt in the late 20th century.
Nos. 3 and 4 have two storeys and six bays, with No. 4 on the left having four bays. Both houses have replaced boarded doors, with No. 4's door set under a rubbed-brick flat arch and No. 3's door being a later addition. Their windows also feature rubbed-brick flat arches and projecting stone sills, but they have been replaced with four-pane sashes. Notably, No. 4 has four window openings that have been blocked with narrow brick. The row has a continuous steeply-pitched roof with rebuilt end and ridge stacks. There is a two-storey gabled wing at the rear of No. 4, while a late 20th-century addition at the rear of No. 3 is not considered of interest. The row is included for its group value.
