Description
No. 51 Claypath is a building that includes three houses, now converted into flats. The left section, formerly No. 49, dates from the late 18th century, while No. 51 on the right is from the mid-18th century. The exterior features painted incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings and quoins on the right side. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate, featuring gable coping and brick chimneys. The building has two and three storeys with two and four bays.
The first house on the right has a six-panelled door with an overlight that includes glazing bars, set within a panelled surround topped with a prominent cornice. It also has painted projecting sills beneath renewed sash windows with late 19th-century glazing, and a foot-scraper recess. The roof has swept eaves and a renewed chimney at the left end.
The second house features six-panelled doors with overlights in wide architraves, one located on the left and another in the third bay, the latter having a bracketed hood. Late 19th-century sashes flank the main door and are present on the top floor, all with plain reveals and projecting painted stone sills. There are two first-floor oriel windows with slate roofs, and curved kneelers support the gable copings, along with two rear end chimneys.
Inside, there is an open-string staircase with vase balusters and a wide grip handrail. The interior of flat No. 5, located at the rear of the first floor, features a chimney piece with bracketed diagonal pilasters supporting a cornice, fluted pilasters beside a high window, and a broad ceiling frieze adorned with a stucco floral design. Additionally, there is a six-panelled door set in an architrave.
