Description
No. 69 Claypath is a Mechanics' Institute, now used as a saleroom, built in 1841 by Ignatius Bonomi and J.A. Cory. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has three bays that are defined by pilasters with flat rustications on the first floor. The ground floor is completely rusticated except for the cellar plinth. There is a panelled double door with an overlight in the right bay, flanked by boot-scraper niches in the plinth, although the scrapers are missing. The building has sash windows with glazing bars set in plain reveals, a breaking band on the ground floor, and an architrave at the top entablature. It also features a first-floor sill band and a prominent eaves cornice, along with stone gable copings and gable end chimneys.
Inside, the main first-floor hall includes a moulded egg-and-dart cornice, moulded cases around the ceiling beams supported by triglyph bracketed pilasters, ornamented roses, and a small gallery at the street end.
