Description
The former Vivian locomotive shed is a narrow, single-storey building that is one bay deep and nine bays long. It is built from red and grey brick and features a metal truss roof. The shed has nine saw tooth gables that provide north-facing rooflights, each with a ventilator at its center. Each gable includes a circular ventilation window with red brick dressings. The bays are divided into panels of grey bricks, which were made at the copperworks, and are accented with a plinth, piers, a corbelled string course, and gable cornices of red brick. White glazed bricks in seven panels display letters over a metre high that indicate the building's function as Vivian and Son engine shed: 'V & S Ltd No1 SHED'. There are wide square openings at either end, which were formerly fitted with wooden doors for locomotive access.
Inside, the shed is open for its full length and is wide enough to accommodate one railway track. There are remnants of timber dividers placed laterally in the roof gables, which were used to carry steam from the locomotives to the central parts of the roof for ventilation. A service pit runs the length of the building in the center of the floor.
