Description
The Locomotive Shed in Aviemore, dated 1898, was built for the Highland Railway. It is a four-road engine shed constructed from snecked sandstone rubble. The south end features four round-arched doorways, with the outer two fitted with original outward-opening double timber doors, while the inner doors have plywood and angle-iron framing. The windows are round-headed, multi-pane, and cast iron framed, arranged in groups of 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 on the west elevation. The east elevation has matching windows, except at the south end, where two bays are covered by a lean-to store with altered fenestration, and two bays are partially covered by a later lean-to building.
At the north end, there is a lean-to workshop bay that is set back from the sides, featuring single side windows and triple end windows, which mask two former windows that are now blocked. The end gables have multi-paned glazed oculi, and the principal roof trusses were replaced with steel at a lower pitch after a fire, now covered with modern profiled-steel cladding. A single-storey, three-bay office is located at the southeast corner, linked to the shed by common-brick infill, and there is a small three-bay detached lavatory block with a galvanised steel ventilator. Both the office and the shed have obelisk finials on their gables, with the northern gable of the shed truncated. In front of the shed, there are stone-lined inspection and ash pits.
