Description

Lochgorm Works, located at Inverness Station on Academy Street, dates from around 1860 and has undergone later alterations and additions. The building features an irregular plan and consists of a single and two-storey workshop, which includes a single-storey, 35-bay, 4-track carriage shed and two shorter, two-storey rectangular ranges at the rear. The exterior is mainly constructed of tooled sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings, while some later additions are made of red brick.

On the southeast elevation, the carriage shed has 35 bays with a blocked round-arched doorway positioned to the left of the center. The other bays contain round-arched windows. The southwest elevation features a four-bay M-gabled carriage shed on the right, which has part-blocked round-arched openings in all bays. To the left, there is a two-storey gable end with a large square-headed opening on the ground floor to the right, a modern window to the left, and a round-arched tripartite window centered in the gable head. An irregularly fenestrated, two-storey range with a near M-gabled roof is located to the outer left, featuring a flat-roofed projection at the center.

The northwest (rear) elevation includes a two-storey, three-bay range on the outer right with segmental-headed openings, a central single window, and flanking tripartite windows on the first floor. To the left, there is a single-storey range with a large square-headed opening on the outer right and round-arched windows to the left.

On the northeast (side) elevation, there is a four-bay, M-gabled carriage shed on the left with two-leaf, boarded timber doors in round-arched openings in all bays. A taller, brick-built gable end is recessed to the right, along with a single-storey projection that is also recessed to the outer right. The building predominantly features round-arched, cast iron window frames with small-pane glazing, although some modern glazing is present on the front sides and rear. The roofs are mainly covered with corrugated metal, with some areas featuring grey slate.

The interior was not seen during the visit in 1999.
