Station Hotel, 18 Academy Street, Inverness

The Station Hotel, located at 18 Academy Street in Inverness, was originally designed by possibly Joseph Mitchell around 1855, with significant alterations made by Matthews and Lawrie between 1858 and 1859. This Italianate building is constructed of ashlar and stands three storeys tall.

The north-west front features seven bays, with the fourth and fifth bays slightly advanced. It has channelled angle strip pilasters, and the windows on the ground and first floors are architraved and corniced. The fourth and fifth windows on the ground floor are tripartite. At the north end, there is a four-storey tower with round-arched, key-blocked pilastered windows, topped with a bracketted cornice, a pediment, a balustrade, and a French pavilion roof. Additionally, there is a diagonally placed Roman Doric portico designed by Alexander Ross in 1898.

The south-west front also has three storeys and features a four-storey tower at the south-east corner. The centre is recessed, with a central tripartite bay on the ground floor. To the south-east, there is a screen arch leading to Falcon Square, which includes a bracketted cornice and balustrade. The main cornice is also bracketted. The interior of the hotel is quite lavish, particularly in the hall and staircase areas.
