Description

The Royal Hotel, located at 34 High Street in Fortrose, is a mid-19th century building that underwent extensive alterations by Matthews and Lawrie between 1879 and 1880. It features painted ashlar stonework, with margins and quoins highlighted in a contrasting color. The hotel has two storeys and an attic, with its front facing Union Street. The façade consists of three bays, including a central door flanked by bipartite windows on the ground floor. The corner facing High Street is bowed and includes a bipartite window on both the ground and first floors, topped by a turret with a conical roof and fishscale slates at the attic level. There is an additional bay on High Street with paired windows on the ground floor and a wallhead chimney. All ground floor openings are adorned with bracketed cornices and connected by a band course. A modern box dormer is present on the Union Street front, along with a heavy modillion cornice and broad eaves. To the left of the original hotel, there is a two-storey, three-bay house on High Street that was incorporated and altered by Ross and Macbeth in 1894, featuring a mansard roof with ornamental cresting. Additionally, there is a single-storey and attic wing at the gable of the Union Street front.
