Description

St Peter and St Boniface Roman Catholic Church, located in Cathedral Square, Fortrose, was designed by John Robertson in 1881. This building features a two-storey, three-bay entrance block alongside a single-storey, four-bay wing that houses the hall, all constructed in a Romanesque style and approximately rectangular in shape. Originally built as a drill hall, it became the Mackerchar Hall in 1945 and was converted into a church in 2015. The structure is made of pink stugged sandstone with polished ashlar dressings and gables of squared rubble.

The entrance block has a pediment and is flanked by giant pilasters, with a stack at the apex. It includes a central door and flanking windows set within a triple arched arcade, with a Venetian window above. The hall features a corbelled eaves course and tripartite round-headed stilted arched windows. Most windows have 2-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, with some featuring early 21st century stained glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a corniced chimney stack topped with unusual square yellow clay cans.

The interior, observed in 2015, showcases a well-preserved late 19th century design, including timber panelled doors with moulded architraves and some timber dado rails. A first-floor room contains a timber chimneypiece with a cast iron inset. The narrow staircase leading to the upper floor has decorative iron balusters and a timber rail. The hammerbeam roof of the hall is lined with timber boarding on the ceiling.
