Description

The Claredon Hotel, located at 1 Shore Street in Oban, is a later 19th century, four-storey, three-bay hotel designed in a classical style with Italianate detailing. The main block faces the street, with a wing that projects at the rear, creating a T-plan layout. The front is constructed of painted ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are rendered.

The street-facing elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central doorway flanked by shop windows. There are shop doorways at the outer bays on both the left and right sides. The design includes stallrisers with a string course, a frieze at the first floor with a cornice and a band course above, and string courses at the first floor lintel and second floor cills. Additional intermediate string courses are present at each floor level.

A heavy cornice at the second floor lintel level is adorned with banded ovolo moulding and dentils, which are returned and stopped at the corners. The elevations are framed by strip pilasters that extend from the first floor cornice to the parapet. Panelled pilasters flank the doorways, with decorative scrolled brackets at the frieze and small pediments at the cornice. A balustrade above the central doorway is terminated with urns.

The hotel features bipartite windows at all levels, except for single windows at the outer bays on the third floor. A low parapet at the third floor incorporates gabled dormers. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case, and the doorways have two-leaf panelled timber storm doors with rectangular fanlights above, which are infilled at the outer bays. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slate, extending over the skews.
