Description

21 and 22 Argyll Square is a later 19th-century, three-storey, five-bay commercial building designed in a bankers' classical, palazzo style. It features shops on the ground floor and has a rectangular plan on a terraced site. The front elevation facing Argyll Square is made of polished ashlar, while the rear elevation is constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings, including a two-storey projection.

The street elevation displays symmetrical stone shopfronts with stall risers and roll-moulded surrounds, featuring entrance doors in the outer bays. The main entrance door, located in the center bay, is round-arched with a keystone and roll-moulded surround. This door is flanked by pilasters on bases, with heavy decorative scrolled brackets that support ball finialled dies, which interlock with the shopfront cornice at the first floor. A string course at the second floor cill level is accentuated at the ends around the downpipes. The eaves are capped with a substantial bracketed cornice and a blocking course above.

The first-floor windows have cills and are architraved, with the bases splayed and vermiculated, featuring a paterae motif near the sash meeting rail. Above these windows are alternating triangular and segmental pediments supported on decorative scrolled brackets and panelled dies. The second-floor windows are also architraved, with scrolls at the cills.

The rear elevation consists of three bays, with a round-arched stair window located centrally between the first and second floors. The rear features plate glass timber sash and case windows, with four panes except for the stained glass stair window. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and the rear wing has a four-flue stack with octagonal cans at the ridge, although the skew copes have been removed.
