Description
The Masonic Hall, located at 7, 8, and 9 Albany Street in Oban, was designed by John C Hay of Edinburgh in 1889. This is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical terraced building featuring shops on the ground floor. It is constructed from bull-faced, squared, and snecked granite, accented with polished sandstone ashlar dressings.
The stone shopfronts include plain stall-risers and pilasters that frame the elevation at the ground floor. Narrow square columns flank the central recessed shop doorways, while matching pilasters frame the door to the upper floor in the centre bay, all adorned with capitals and bases. Above the shopfronts is a cornice that is advanced at the centre, serving as a cornice for the central door. This door features an architraved, round-arched two-pane fanlight over a bracketed lintel, with decorative scrolled brackets supporting a balustrade above, complete with fluted dies and ball finials.
At the first floor, there is a cill course that is advanced at the cills with brackets below in the outer bays. The centre window has a moulded architrave and a carved keystone, each topped with a semicircular pediment that displays a Masonic symbol in a semicircular panel on the lintels. A band course runs along the eaves, with carved decorative panels at each bay.
The shopfronts feature plate glass windows, and the doors have panelled ingoes, with a timber door to the right that has a panel and a glazed upper section. The upper floor has plate glass timber sash and case windows, and there is a six-panel door at the centre.
Additional features include a pendant lamp on a bracket at the central door, a profiled gutter at the eaves, and a mutual multi-flue stack shared with the tenement to the northwest. A modern, cement-rendered two-storey addition has been made to the rear.
