Description

17 and 19 Argyll Square in Oban is a later 19th-century, three-storey and attic Italianate tenement building with three bays, designed symmetrically above the shopfront. It is situated on a terraced site and features two additional wings at the rear, one three-storey and one single-storey. The front elevation facing Argyll Street is constructed of polished sandstone ashlar, while the rear elevation and wings are made of random rubble with ashlar dressings.

The original shopfront remains intact and is symmetrical, except for the tenement door located in the outer left bay. The design includes stall risers and roll-mouldings around the openings, which are stopped at their bases. Above the shopfront is a cornice over a blank painted frieze, with another cornice at the second floor that oversteps a downpipe on the right. The eaves feature a modillioned cornice with scrolled brackets at the ends and above the windows. The windows are architraved, with bipartite windows in the outer bays and round-arched windows on the second floor.

The building has modern glazing and a grey slate roof that is piended to the single-storey addition. The street-facing elevation includes pitched-roof, slate-hung dormers with barge boards, pendant brackets at the apex, and round-arched windows, which are bipartite in the outer bays. The rear pitch also has piend-roofed, slate-hung dormers. A square downpipe with a hopper is located at the left end of the street elevation, and there is a rubble stack with a modern cope at the eastern end.
