Laichmoray Hotel, Station Road, Elgin

The Laichmoray Hotel, located on Station Road in Elgin, was designed by Thomas Mackenzie in 1853. This large, four-storey, three-bay Italianate hotel features a four-bay frontage facing Moss Street, along with a three-bay wing at the rear and a two-storey, single-bay wing on the west gable. The building is harled with a rubble rear and wing, and it showcases polished ashlar dressings and margins, with bullfaced rubble used for the raised basement and rusticated quoins.

The hotel has a recessed narrow centre bay that includes a round-arched entrance and a bellcast canopy porch, which is accessed by a flight of steps. On either side of the entrance are tripartite windows with shallow corbelled and balustraded balconies. The first floor features round-headed tripartite windows, also with balconies. The windows are adorned with moulded architraves, and the first-floor windows on Moss Street have cornices. Additional architectural details include quoins, a moulded eaves course, modillioned eaves, tall chimney stacks, and a shallow piended slate roof.

A rear wing was added around 1985. There is also a two-storey centre-arched stable block on the east gable that has been converted for hotel use; this structure is harled with a bullfaced rubble centre bay and has a slate roof.

The property is enclosed by high rubble garden walls at the rear and along Moss Street, which feature a pair of square ashlar gatepiers at the entrance on Moss Street.
