Description

Thomas Mackenzie, 1853. Large 4-storey, 3-bay Italiante

hotel with 4-bay frontage to Moss Street; 4-storey and

attic, 3-bay wing to rear; 2-storey, single bay wing to

W gable. Harled, rubble rear and wing; polished ashlar

dressings and margins; bullfaced rubble to raised

basement, rusticated quoins. Recessed narrow centre bay

with round-arched entrance and bellcast canopy porch,

approached by flight of steps. Flanking tripartites with

shallow corbelled and balustraded balconies;

round-headed tripartites to 1st floor, also with balconies.

Moulded architraves to windows, corniced to 1st floor

Moss Street windows, quoins; moulded eaves course;

modillioned eaves; tall chimney stacks; shallow piended

slate roof.

Circa 1985 rear wing.

2-storey centre arched stable block to E gable now

converted to hotel use; harled with bullfaced rubble

centre bay; slate roof.

High rubble garden walls to rear and to Moss Street;

pair square ashlar gatepiers to Moss Street.
