Description

The Royal Hotel, located at 21 Canongate in Jedburgh, is an early 19th-century, symmetrical, three-storey hotel with a cellar. It features a five-bay façade constructed from squared, snecked, and stugged ashlar, set on ground that slopes to the east. The windows are present on all floors, with the second floor having smaller windows. There is a base course at the bottom of the building.

On the north elevation facing Canongate, the ground floor is harled and has a band course above it. In the center, there are steps leading up to a corniced tripartite doorcase made of painted ashlar, which has chamfered reveals. The entrance consists of a two-leaf panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight and flanked by three-pane sidelights with sunken aprons. The inner bays have basement vents located below the windows, and the far left bay features a shouldered carriage arch leading to a pend. The upper floors have tripartite windows in the center bay, with additional windows on either side.

The east elevation has a M-shaped roof and is made of rubble with gablehead stacks, which are truncated on the right side. This elevation is mostly blank, except for a bipartite window in the center of the upper floors.

The south elevation, or rear, consists of six bays made from squared and snecked rubble. There is a carriage pend in the right bay at ground level, while the central bay is blank. The rear features four-pane timber sash and case windows, with the ground and first floors having fixed multi-pane windows that open at the top. The roof is M-shaped, covered with grey slates, and has brick stacks with lead flashing at the skews.

The interior was not seen in 1992.
