Royal Hotel, Station Road, Elgin

The Royal Hotel, located on Station Road in Elgin, was built in 1865. This two-storey building with an attic features a wide three-bay façade constructed from tooled ashlar stone, complemented by polished ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins.

The central bay is narrow and recessed, featuring a central door that is sheltered by a balustraded portico supported by pilasters and Roman Doric columns. This central entrance is flanked by canted bay windows, which also have balustrades. All windows have lugged margins, and there is a cill band that connects the first-floor windows. The building has eaves and projecting eaves, with a pair of ridge corniced stacks arranged in batteries of four, and a similar arrangement at the rear. The front and flanks of the building each have three segmental-headed dormers, and the roof is a shallow piended slate design.

The property is further enhanced by square ashlar gatepiers that feature cable moulding at the angles and corniced caps, along with a monogram JG. Coped rubble garden walls surround the property, and there is a later addition of a conservatory.
