Description
St Columba's Church of Scotland, built between 1905 and 1906 by P MacGregor Chalmers, is a transitional Norman/Early English Gothic structure. It has a cruciform layout with an additional south aisle and a vestry wing to the north. The church is constructed from bull-faced rubble both inside and out, featuring tooled and polished ashlar dressings. It is topped with a steeply pitched Cumbrian green slate roof. The east and west gables are adorned with triple round-headed lancets, while the main entrance is located in a round-arched porch on the west gable of the south aisle, showcasing Romanesque ornamentation on the capitals of the engaged pillars.
Inside, the church consists of a nave and south aisle, with stylised leaf capitals supporting the south arcade. The choir features tall round arches decorated with interlacing carvings. The choir and crossing have simple wooden barrel vaulting, while the nave, transepts, and aisle are covered by a braced rafter roof. The east gable lancets are filled with stained glass by M C Webster for Stephen Adam, and there is a single light in the south aisle by Douglas Strachan.
A notable feature is the fine hexagonal wooden pulpit and tester, dated 1684, which was originally from Old St Giles in Elgin. It includes fluted Ionic pilasters at the angles, a richly carved sounding board above, and engaged Corinthian fluted capitals at the rear. Additionally, there is a pair of oak Ministers' seats, stalls, and a holy table, all carved in a similar classical style to the pulpit.
