Description

The County Hotel, located at 32 High Street in Banff, is a building from the later 18th century. It features two storeys above a raised basement and has five symmetrical bays. The site slopes to the rear, revealing three storeys and an attic, also with five bays. The front is constructed of tooled ashlar with painted ashlar margins and dressings, while the return gable and rear are harled, also with ashlar margins.

The central entrance is highlighted by a projecting square painted ashlar porch, built between 1825 and 1830. This porch features a central door beneath a wide radial fanlight and sidelights, with clasped angle pilasters and a corniced blocked wallhead. The porch extends over the raised basement.

The outer and rear windows are paired and consist of timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing. The building has a corniced blocked wallhead, a slate roof, and moulded corniced end stacks.

At the rear, there is a later forestair that provides access to a new rear entrance, along with an enlarged raised basement window and two modern box dormers with varied glazing.

Inside, the stair hall contains a wide staircase with simple wooden stick balusters and a polished wooden handrail. To the left on the ground floor is a former parlour, featuring an anthemion frieze and a chimneypiece, both dating from 1825 to 1830. The interior also includes raised and fielded 18th-century panelled doors and window shutters, as well as beaded panelled window shutters from 1825 to 1830.
