Description

The Church Street Arcade Entrance, located on Academy Street in Inverness, was designed by Matthews and Lawrie and built between 1869 and 1870. This Italianate structure features an ashlar façade facing Academy Street, which includes a single-storey, three-bay front. The entrance is marked by a tripartite round-headed arch supported by Corinthian columns, with carved animal head keystones, channelled angle piers, a bracketed cornice, and a balustrade topped with urns. The outer bays are lower and each contains one round-headed window, also with a cornice and balustrade surmounted by urns.

The arcade itself is constructed of brick, featuring arcaded shopfronts and clerestory windows, with a timber roof supported by cast-iron principals. At the front, which closes off Church Street, there is a tower made of snecked rubble, featuring a round-arched entrance with an oculus above and a pediment.

The markets have undergone alterations and extensions, with a significant addition by the Burgh Surveyor in 1890, which included a south-west market hall with a timber and glass double-pitched roof supported by cast-iron columns. The central hall has a square plan and features a timber and glass roof with cast-iron principals. An arcade leading to Union Street was added by Ross and Macbeth in 1890, while the arcade to Queensgate, designed by Duncan Cameron in 1897, features segmental-headed arches at each end. The northern part of this arcade includes shopfronts with polished granite pilastrade, an elaborate frieze, and an egg-and-dart cornice, along with a cast-iron and fully glazed roof. The southern part features pilastered shopfronts, originally designed with three round-headed arches each, and a timber and glass roof.
