Description
This building, originally a bank located at 15 Academy Street in Inverness, was designed by John Rhind in 1864 and later refronted with alterations by William Mackintosh between 1872 and 1873. It features an Italianate style, constructed of ashlar, and comprises three storeys plus an attic. The front facing Academy Street is asymmetrical yet balanced, consisting of four bays, with the third bay slightly advanced. The entrance is columned, and the ground floor windows are chamfered and shouldered arched.
On the first floor, the first and second windows are corniced, the third is a tripartite window with a consoled segmental pediment, and the fourth is a bipartite window with a consoled cornice. The second floor includes architraved windows for the first and second, a round-arched tripartite window for the third, and a corniced bipartite window for the fourth. The advanced bay is topped with a French pavilion roof and features a segmental pedimented wallhead dormer with a balustrade, flanked by chimney stacks, and includes two canted dormers.
The southeast corner is canted, while the Union Street front has seven bays, with engaged columns featuring foliated capitals at the ground floor windows. The first-floor windows are corniced, and the northeast window is tripartite with a consoled segmental pediment. The second floor windows are architraved, with the northeast window being tripartite. There are three dormers and a slated roof. Additional alterations and extensions were made by Ross and Macbeth in 1903-1904.
