Description
Crown Primary School, located on Kingsmills Road in Inverness, was designed by John Rhind and built between 1878 and 1880. This Gothic-style building is two stories high and features an asymmetrical seven-bay front. The five left bays are nearly symmetrical, with advanced and gabled ends that include quadripartite windows. The first-floor windows are pointed arched with plate tracery and hoodmoulds, and there is an off-centre gabled porch. To the right, there are two bays that include a tower set in the re-entrant angle with the advanced left bay. The tower consists of four stages, featuring a pointed-arched entrance door at the lowest stage and tall pointed belfry openings at the top stage, along with a corbelled parapet and a spire that has a bellcast at the eaves. The building also includes mullioned and transomed windows, with coursed stonework and slated roofs. At the rear, there is an infant school, designed by William Mackintosh and built in 1899, which is a single-storey block.
